Whether you’re in the process of renovating an old house or apartment building, or upgrading your office space, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is what type of flooring to install. The choice is not only important for aesthetic reasons but also in determining cost, ease of installation, durability, and maintenance requirements.
Here are the flooring types and styles that interior designers and renovations pros are saying will be popular in the new year.
Flooring Trends for 2024
- Bleached/Whitewashed Wood
Some folks are calling this “beachy wood” flooring because it evokes the feel of sun-bleached or faded white painted decks by the sea. Bleaching brings out the raw natural look of the wood. Whitewashing wood floors creates a similar effect. Bleached or whitewashed wood flooring is extremely durable but requires extra care in cleaning as dirt and marks will be more noticeable. - Large Graphic Tiles
Tile floors are a perennial favorite for their almost-endless choice of colors and designs as well as their durability and ease of maintenance. Oversized porcelain tiles in hexagonal patterns will be installed not only in kitchens and bathrooms but in other living and office spaces as well in 2024. - Reclaimed Barn Wood
Old barn wood has been popular for generations for many applications, but technology has made it possible to do away with the barns and pricey wood altogether. Artificial tile flooring that is indistinguishable from the real thing is now available. It’s cheaper and more durable than genuine barn wood while still creating the same warm, comfy atmosphere. - Smoked Wood Floors
The unique look of smoked wood flooring is really catching on for the new year. This type of wood flooring is created by placing planks in a sealed chamber and exposing them to concentrated ammonia vapors. The result is an irregular dark staining pattern that is very beautiful and earthy looking. - Old-School Black & White
The black and white checkerboard flooring patterns of yesteryear are still in the past, but the motif is making a partial comeback with these binary colors used in whimsical designs and patterns creating a striking and attractive mix of old and new.
